Palinode

Type:

Structure, Pivot Requirement

Description:

This is a form that has strophes and antistrophes. It is a poetic retraction of a statement. There are two strophes that vary in shape, followed by antistrophes of the same stanzaic forms as the two strophes in reverse order which take back or retract what was said in the strophes. Technically, the strophes are the ode and the antistrophes the palinode. In some ways this change of tone is similar to the turn or pivot of the sonnet.

Origin:

Greek/Italian
